Part of our lab’s work focuses on something you may not think about every day—human excrement composting (HEC). Globally, sanitation remains a major challenge: as of 2024, 2.2 billion people lacked safely managed drinking water, 3.4 billion lacked safely managed sanitation, and 1.7 billion lacked basic hygiene services at home. Composting toilets use little to no water, can be installed where infrastructure is absent or failing, and turn a waste problem into a nutrient rich resource!
