The Compost Microbiome Lab (CML) focuses on something you may not think about every day: human excrement composting (HEC). Globally, sanitation remains a major challenge: as of 2024, 2.2 billion people lacked safely managed drinking water, 3.4 billion lacked safely managed sanitation, and 1.7 billion lacked basic hygiene services at home. We think microbiome science can aid in turning human waste to into a nutrient rich resource that will help address public health crises, support biodiscovery of new enzymes, microbes, and microbiomes, and even help us build the bioregenerative life support systems that will enable us to settle other worlds!
